Living Well After Robotic Prostate Cancer Surgery

A diagnosis of prostate cancer can be overwhelming, but advancements in treatment offer hope. Robotic prostate cancer surgery, a minimally invasive approach, is a state-of-the-art and effective option for many men. While the surgery itself is a significant step, the focus then shifts to recovery and living a full life after treatment. Here is what to expect in the weeks and months following robotic prostate cancer surgery to help equip you with tips for a healthy and active future.

The recovery process from robotic prostate cancer surgery varies for everyone, but here's a general timeline:

  • The First Week: Most patients go home within a day or two after surgery. There will likely be some pain and discomfort, which medication can manage. A catheter is usually in place to help drain urine while the involved area heals and is typically removed within a week. Rest is crucial, but gentle walking is encouraged to aid healing and prevent blood clots.
  • Weeks 2-4: Energy levels will gradually increase as the body heals. Most men will feel about 80% recovered in term of their strength and energy level, can resume daily activities, including driving, but should avoid strenuous exercise. Kegel exercises can be started to improve urinary function and control. Oral erectile medications such as tadalafil are given to increase blood flow to the penis to aid in recovery of potency.
  • Weeks 4-8: Blood testing including PSA level will be performed.  The urologist will monitor urinary and sexual function. Men in this recovery phase can gradually increase activity levels including strenuous exercise, but bike riding is not recommended. Pelvic floor therapy may be offered to some men to aid in faster recovery of bladder control.
  • Beyond Week 8:  Improvement in urinary control will continue, with many men experiencing near total control within 3-6 months, following a consistent exercise routine and performing Kegel exercises. Sexual function may also return, though it may take longer and may require additional support or medication.

Living Well After Surgery:

Beyond the physical recovery, here are some key aspects to focus on for a healthy and fulfilling life after robotic prostate cancer surgery:

  1. Follow-up Care: Regular check-ups are crucial to monitor progress and detect potential cancer recurrence. These follow-up visits typically involve blood tests and possibly imaging studies.
  1. Nutrition and Exercise: Maintaining a healthy weight and regular physical activity are essential for overall health and well-being. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can support and even boost a healthy immune system. Aim for moderate intensity exercise most days of the week, incorporating enjoyable activities like walking, swimming, or weight training
  1. Managing Urinary Incontinence: Urinary incontinence is a common side effect after robotic prostate cancer surgery. Kegel exercises are crucial to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and improve bladder control. Absorbent underwear products are also available to manage leaks while regaining urinary control. Some men may benefit from pelvic floor therapy and biofeedback therapy to strengthen the muscles around the urethra.
  1. Sexual Health: Erectile dysfunction can occur after robotic prostate cancer surgery, though it is temporary for many men. Talk to your doctor about medication, pumps, penile injection therapy, and implants that can help restore erectile function. In addition, open communication with your partner is crucial for maintaining intimacy.
  1. Mental and Emotional Well-being: Prostate cancer and its treatments can be emotionally challenging. Consider joining a support group for men who have undergone similar experiences. Talking to a therapist may also be beneficial in managing stress and anxiety post-treatment.
  1. Returning to Work and Activities: Most men can return to work within 2-4 weeks after surgery, depending on their job demands. Gradually increasing activity levels and listening to the body's cues are essential to ensure safety. Discuss any necessary workplace adjustments with your employer.
  1. Maintaining a Positive Attitude: A positive outlook can significantly impact robotic prostate cancer surgery recovery and overall well-being. Focus on the positive aspects of life and celebrate milestones. Connect with loved ones for support and motivation.

Remember, you are not alone. Many men have successfully navigated prostate cancer treatment and returned to a healthy, fulfilling life. By following the doctor's recommendations, prioritizing health, and maintaining a positive outlook, many men thrive after robotic prostate cancer surgery.
